Starting this blog feels like a natural next step for us at the Spencer Welch Vocal Studio because our passion is to provide top-notch vocal instruction and help strengthen the music community. Whether it’s connecting musicians with Vancouver’s top music industry professionals at Tuesday Night Music Club or simply updating you on what’s going on via facebook, it’s important to us to stay connected with you while providing valuable vocal knowledge and music resources. [...] And essentially, that’s what this blog will be about. That is, our studio’s insight on singing, music, and the music community: voice technique, style, and performance tips, music and vocal performance reviews, concert updates, profiles on local artists and music industry pros, and how you can personally and/or professionally incorporate more music in your life. Let me introduce myself and the rest of the team at the Spencer Welch Vocal Studio: I’m Rebecca, an associate teacher of SWVS. I’m a singer and certified Speech Level Singing (SLS) vocal coach. I’m also the SLS Educational Advisor in the regions of Northwestern USA and Western Canada, which means that I oversee all the SLS teachers and educational events that take place around here. I also book the musicians for our music networking night, Tuesday Night Music Club. Spencer is the founder of SWVS and a Master Instructor of the Speech Level Singing technique. Out of the 700+ SLS teachers in the world, there are 5 Master Instructors who are in charge of training and evaluating all the SLS teachers. To be a part of the IMT (Instructor Management Team), you have to have taught SLS for a minimum of 11 years (although most IMT members surpass that significantly) and be personally invited by the rest of the IMTs. If the vocal world were the Star Wars universe, SLS vocal coaches would be the Jedis and the IMTs would be the Jedi Masters. Spencer is our Yoda! The newest addition to our team is associate teacher, Courtenay Ennis. Recently certified as a SLS coach, Courtenay is also an incredible, world-class professional pianist and the music director for Uncle Randy Productions -acclaimed North Shore theatre company, Carson Graham and Magee High Schools’ musical theatre programs and The Famous Players – one of Vancouver’s top corporate entertainment bands. We are so excited to have him on board at SWVS! Next up is Barron S. She’s our brilliant, whatever-you-need-I-will-turn-it-to-gold girl! An up and coming singer with a strong music project, Barron spearheads Tuesday Night Music Club, helps with SWVS and SLS events and will be the “Artist Contributor” for our blog. Her work is what keeps our studio running smoothly and efficiently. She’s pictured here with her beautiful daughter, Olivia, who at 5 years old, already sings with an impeccable vibrato! At an early age, Spencer knew music was going to be his life. He began singing and playing piano professionally at age 17. After studying classical composition at Simon Fraser University, he transfered to the Capilano College music program to major in Jazz Studies. Since college, Spencer has toured North America extensively, playing theatres and festivals with bands such as Rhythm & News and the Carolyn Arends Band. He has shared the stage with guitar legend Phil Keaggy, Sixpence None the Richer, and The Newsboys. In the studio, Spencer has sung on recordings by countless artists, including Randy Bachman and Carolyn Arends. His vocals appeared on the #1 CCM radio single “Go With God.” In 1999, Spencer became the first Certified Speech Level Singing™ instructor in Canada. He established the Spencer Welch Vocal Studio, later moving it to its current location in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Today with over 100 active clients at any one time, Spencer teaches amateur singers and recording artists specializing in pop, R&B, rock, and jazz.
